The textile industry (weaving, dying and knitted goods developed in the early XXième century but today it is in decline although it still gives a living to quite a few Roquecourbe families. In addition firms, such as Laur, Gout, Berlaine, also support a number of service industries in Roquecourbe and throughout the region. |
The Chateau
The "Arms" of the village show the towers of the chateau, the curved ("recourbé") rock "La Coqueluche" and the "fleurs de lys" of the French crown. The "La Coqueluche" rock on which the chateau once stood offers a superb view of the village and its surroundings. On the water's edge at Siloé's Alley there is a spring with health-giving mineral charged water. Not inappropriately the sports complex and camping site are close by.
The stone bridge which connected the chateau to the village gives interesting views of the old houses overhanging the river (see photo).
Historic streets and alleys
The village was surrounded by ramparts with three gates each with a drawbridge. Leaving from the central "Place de la Mairie" there a series of narrow streets of old houses with overhanging wooden roofs and wooden frame walls ("colombage").
Place de la Mairie
In 1594 a deer from the woods surrounding the chateau was captured in a ditch in the village. This hunt is depicted on a beam of one of the houses (next to the baker's (Place de la Mairie) where there is a carving of the deer being chased by a dog (see photo below).
