When Peter Bennett is made redundant from his publishing company in the UK he decides he needs to take a break before starting on a new phase of his career. Influenced by his mother's life-long love of France he decides to accept long-standing invitations to visit to two friends in South-West France or "Deepest France" as he likes to call it. His misadventures start when his friend,Jean, has to travel urgently to the USA and is not there to meet him at the airport. Instead he lends Peter his four-wheel drive Land Cruiser and leaves instructions to find his house deep in the mountains. Peter follows the instructions to the letter but instead of finding his friend's house he meets a strange couple who show him a well which seems to have strange effects on those who visit it. When he visits his second friend, Charles, he finds that the ex-pat Brit is not quietly retired, as he had thought, but involved in an illegal property scheme in which he tries to enlist Peter's help.
